Why visit Pondicherry

Here’s what the city has to offer...

Pondicherry or Puducherry, a seaside town on the southeast coast of India, was a trading outpost for the French East India Company. At different times it was also under the Dutch and the British. But it was the French who controlled it for the longest time, and the French influence is visible in the local architecture, street names and even in the red hats or kepis that the policemen wear. The city’s many attractions include the Manakula Vinayagar Temple, Eglise Notre-Dame Des Anges Church, Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Raj Niwas that was at one time the residence of Joseph Francois Dupleix, the Governor-General for French India.

Close to the city is the experimental township of Auroville, the archaeological dig site of Arikamedu, and the rock-cut structures of Mahabalipuram. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram established in 1926 draws many seekers. And the laid-back pace of the city and its many sights make for a relaxing getaway for all. What will your Pondicherry be about?
