Here’s what the city has to offer...
Chennai, a city that was until recently called Madras, was one of the earliest settlements of the East India Company in India. Today, it is India’s 4th largest city and the capital of Tamil Nadu, a state that sees the highest number of tourist arrivals each year. Colourful temples, grand colonial buildings, bustling markets, spicy south Indian fare, iconic Filter Kaapi, classical music and dance, the finest silk and jewellery stores and the larger than life movie stars – there are many unique cultural encounters that a visitor can look forward to.
An hour’s drive from the city is the Mamallapuram group of monuments, a UNESCO world site of rock cut structures from the 7th and 8th centuries, and to the north is Pulicat lake, a haven for bird watchers and nature lovers.
